DURBAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY ANNUAL REPORT 2020
Total Research Outputs
(Ms, Ds Publications) 2016 – 2020
The year 2020 saw a 29% increase in Research Outputs to 845.31 units. Although the final units awarded are yet to be confirmed by DHET, the latter was largely due to a 37% increase in publications outputs. There was also strong growth in weighted Doctorates, from 135 in 2019 to 180 in 2020, and continued growth in the number of Master’s (7%).
There has been a strong drive to increase postgraduate enrolments, but the number of graduates completing

successfully and in minimum time is subject to many factors outside the control of the University. Figure 19 refers.
In addition, implementation of the new policy on the evaluation of ‘Creative Outputs and Innovations produced by the South African Higher Education Institutions’ resulted in the University being awarded 2 units for 1 creative output under the ‘Theatre, Performance and Dance’ category, featuring ‘Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing’. Interventions are being implemented in 2021 to support our staff who are working in the creative and innovation space to write up scholarly annotations on the contribution of their knowledge products.
Regarding research outputs by publication type, Table 7 shows that the Research Publications Outputs submitted to DHET increased by 37% in 2020. There was strong growth in all publication types, with books and chapters increasing the most (81%), followed by a 79% increase in conference proceedings. Final confirmed units for 2020 will only be completed by DHET during the course of 2021.
