The number of male and female students in each of the three fields of study, as a proportion of total enrolments, is given in Figure 5. Over the past 3 years the increase in female enrolments has manifested mainly in the Business/ Commerce field, increasing from 22% in 2018 to 24% in 2020. The proportion of females in SET remained
steady at 19% of total enrolments between 2019 and 2020, although the proportion of male students in SET decreased by 1 percentage point (Figure 5). There was no change in the gender composition of enrolments in the Humanities, at 10% for females and 7% for males.

The increase in female enrolments noted earlier occurred in the Business/Commerce field, increasing by 1% at undergraduate level and 10% at postgraduate level between 2019 and 2020. Regarding the gender composition of postgraduate enrolments in 2020, the proportion of males and females in Business was
roughly equal at 50%. Females dominated in SET at 55% and comprised 53% of enrolments in the Humanities.
Differences in enrolments in the major fields of study by race are reflected in Figure 6 for the period 2018 to 2020.

African student enrolments in Business/Commerce increased by 2 percentage points to 38% in 2020, while those in SET (35%) and the Humanities (16%) remained unchanged. The percentage of SET enrolments for all other race groups continued on a declining trend, from 11% in 2017 to 8% in 2020.
