The composition of the graduates by race in 2020 was as follows: Africans 87%, Coloureds 1%, Indians 11%, and Whites 1%. Over the past 3 years it is only the proportion of African students that has increased, from 81% of total graduates in 2018 to 87% in 2020.
Graduation by Major Field of Study
Of the 9 676 students who completed their studies in 2020, 42% were in SET, 44% in Business/Commerce and 14% in the Humanities (Figure 13). Compared to 2019, SET has increased by 2 percentage points and Business/ Commerce has increased by 5 percentage points, while the Humanities has decreased by 7 percentage points. Of the 4 058 total SET graduates in 2020, 1 976 (49%) were female – an increase of 3 percentage points compared to 2019.
Whereas the graduation rate is the number of graduates as a percentage of total headcount enrolments in a reporting year, it is interesting to consider the number of graduates in a particular field of study as a percentage of enrolments within that particular field in a reporting year. Figure 14 refers.
