DURBAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY ANNUAL REPORT 2020
Fields of Study
Figure 11. Percentage success rates by major field of study, 2018 – 2020
Although success rates in SET are the lowest of the three fields of study, the biggest improvement was observed in this field, with an increase from 81% in 2019 to 85% in 2020. Success rate in Business/Commerce was the highest at 89% in 2020, but a 2 percentage points decrease was observed in the success rate in the Humanities.
GRADUATION RATES
The graduation rate is calculated as the number of graduates as a percentage of the total headcount enrolled in a reporting year. Consequently, the graduation rate will increase if the number of graduates increases, the headcount enrolment decreases or a combination of the two occurs.
Of the 34 061 students registered for various undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications at DUT in 2020, 9 676 (28%) completed their studies
and graduated at the end of 2020. This indicator has remained between 26% and 28% for the years 2018 – 2020, exceeding the DHET norm of 23%. The number of graduates increased from 7 981 in 2018 to 9 676 in 2020. Between 2019 and 2020, the number of graduates increased by about 5% and the total headcount enrolment decreased by about 4%. Around 97% of the 2020 graduates were completing undergraduate studies.
Graduation by Gender and Race
The higher success rates for females are translating into higher completion rates, with a greater proportion of female graduates (57%) relative to male graduates (43%) in 2020. Figure 12 shows the 3-year trend in the gender composition of graduates. The majority of female graduates were in Business/Commerce (49%) and constituted 28% of total graduates. Of the 4 133 male students who graduated in 2020, 50% were in the SET field.
