Top achiever, Bhekithemba Mcombothi was ecstatic when he finally got a chance to walk the graduation stage. He obtained Cum Laude with his Diploma in Information and Communications Technology in Business Analysis at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2024 Autumn Graduation ceremony which took place at the Olive Convention Centre on Wednesday evening, 22 May 2024.

Mcombothi (23) from Lindelani, Durban had been counting down to this momentous occasion and he could not believe it when it had finally arrived.

“Knowing that every day, I was a step closer to my graduation kept me going. I disregarded the challenges I faced within my journey and I worked on improving my self-confidence. My focus was on excelling in my studies. Coming from a disadvantaged background motivated me to never lose sight of my dreams. It reminded me of what I came for at DUT, which was to make my life better. Most of it all, I always wanted to make my mama proud of me,” reiterated Mcombothi.

For him, graduating Cum Laude was a testament of the dedication and hard work, he had invested in his studies. He referred to it as not just recognition for academic excellence but also recognition of his perseverance, resilience and the support he received from his family, friends and mentors. He indicated that this accolade was a significant milestone that has filled him with immense pride and gratitude.

He chose this career path to keep up with the evolving technology. Mcombothi felt the need to adapt to the ever-changing technology and expressed his appreciation to DUT for equipping with the necessary skills to make in impact in the Information Technology industry. He is currently enrolled for his Advanced Diploma in Information and Communications Technology.

Mcombothi is currently working as a Software Developer Volunteer at Coas Solutions, a small company where the entire operation is conducted online.

“We use digital tools and platforms to communicate, collaborate, and coordinate our work remotely. I am still new and being mentored so what I do is to assist in making successful performing websites,” he shared.

Self-love, Self-confidence and believing in yourself, is what Mcobothi believes in.

“You need to love yourself first, showing yourself love for who you are. Secondly, your self-confidence will improve and you will start believing in your abilities and skills. Thirdly, its vital to believe in what you do, you will then have a strong sense of purpose and commitment to the actions you take,” concluded Mcombothi.
