SRC FINANCE OFFICER, SIHLE NKOSI URGES THE DUT COMMUNITY TO CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS THE GROWTH OF THE SRC GRANT

The Student Representative Council (SRC) Finance Officer at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Sihle Nkosi is urging the DUT community to contribute towards the growth of the SRC grant, which is aimed at assisting students with financial burden, to pay their registration fees or clear their historical debt.

His wish is for the SRC grant to reach as many needy students as possible, to offer financial relief.

Nkosi, a third-year Internal Auditing student is responsible for the finances and budget of the SRC.

“I ensure that the SRC budget gets audited and presented as per the SRC constitution. I allocate funds for those clubs and societies that presents their programmes of action and undergo the approval process,” said Nkosi.

He is looking forward to seeing the SRC becoming a well-grounded, definitive, cooperative, and a helpful body for all students that will represent the students interests optimally.

“I also wish that through its budget, the SRC could help pay the registration fees for a large number of disadvantaged students. I wish we could collaborate with other departments and units within the institution to a point to convene funds from other departments/units to help students with financial burden and make reasonable donations to units like the Disability Rights Unit. I wish the SRC can become more transparent to students as transparency is one of the DUT Living Values,” shared Nkosi.

He is confident that if the SRC collaborates with clubs and societies within the institution, it will fulfil its mandate of ensuring that students become engaged, integrated and enjoy a holistic university experience.

Nkosi is proud that the current SRC is made up of students that have a 65% aggregate pass and above. He is certain that they will lead by example and maintain their aggregate pass as they strive to promote academic excellence throughout their term of office.

He attributed his leadership qualities to being a House Committee member within his residence which is Ronald Residence and also being part of the Vuna Leadership Academy, during his first-year of studies in 2022.

“Being part of these platforms redefined the term leadership for me, it groomed my intellectual capacity and the way of approaching different obstacles in life. I just recently received a Residence Life award for achieving an aggregate pass of 75% and above and for having shown a great deal of commitment, discipline, and involvement to the Residence Life programmes. This has made my DUT journey to become even more momentous,” reiterated Nkosi.
