A Pietermaritzburg youngster will head to Malaysia next week as he prepares to represent South Africa at the Asia World Model United Nations conference.
Lungelo Maphumulo (19), from Impendle in Pietermaritzburg, is a third-year civil engineering student at the Durban University of Technology.
Speaking to Weekend Witness this week, Maphumulo said is he is not only thrilled to travel abroad but he is also excited to broaden his horizons by engaging with global peers and experiencing different cultures.
The conference, on February 14, is an international platform where young leaders from across the globe simulate United Nations sessions.
Delegates collaborate to discuss and propose solutions to global challenges, fostering diplomacy, leadership, and cross-cultural understanding.
“I am honoured to represent both South Africa and DUT at this prestigious event, and showcase the talent and potential of our country and institution on a global stage,” said Maphumulo.
He added that it is his first time travelling abroad or outside KwaZulu Natal. “This journey is a reflection of my academic and leadership achievements. I have been recognised with the Dean’s Prestigious Award, which celebrates outstanding academic performance and leadership.
I also received the Exemplary Student Leadership Award for my dedication to serving the DUT community and the Academic and Leadership Award for excelling in both academics and my various leadership roles.
“These awards are a validation of my hard work and inspire me to continue striving for excellence as I embark on this incredible opportunity at AWIMUN. My hope for this conference is that it will serve as a platform to empower young minds around the world,” he said.
Maphumulo added that he believes that exposure to international discussions and diverse perspectives can ignite a passion for leadership and change in others.
“Coming from a disadvantaged background, I am truly grateful for the support I’ve received, including sponsorships from DUT, the Impendle Local Municipality, and others.
“I hope to share my experience with them and inspire others. I also want to thank my family for their unwavering support throughout this journey.”
He added that his passion for leadership and community development has been nurtured through various roles he holds at DUT.
I am the deputy chairperson of the Green Campus Initiative (GCI), where I advocate for sustainability and environmental awareness
“I also serve as the outreach co-ordinator for the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) DUT student chapter, promoting engagement between students and the industry.”
“I am also a tutor for the civil engineering methods module, assisting my peers academically. These roles, combined with my participation in NATESA, where I’ve grown spiritually and ethically, have motivated me to take on opportunities like AWIMUN.
This conference aligns with my mission to create meaningful change while growing as a leader,” Maphumulo added.
