The newly appointed Student Representative Council (SRC) Organisation and Accommodation Officer in Pietermaritzburg at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Siphamandla Mbatha has devoted himself to improving the quality of life for students living in residences.
He aims to increase SRC students’ engagement and participation. Form stronger relationships between the SRC and the university administration and advocate for student’s needs and interests in residences.
“I want to improve the quality of life for students living in the residences by providing more opportunities for recreation and socialisation. Create a positive and supportive environment for all students, regardless of their background or identity. Ensure that their accommodations are safe, comfortable, and affordable. Also, work with the students’ transportation committee to ensure that students have access to safe and reliable transportation,” he said.
Mbatha, 25, enrolled in Tourism and Management and has praised DUT staff and students for their support.
“When I was appointed, I was a bit nervous, but the DUT staff and students have been so welcoming and supportive; which saw me adapting to my role quicker than I expected,’’ he said.
He emphasised that the SRC consists of diverse representatives which reflects the diversity of the student body, ensuring transparency and accountability which aligns with the DUT ENVISION2030.
Mbatha also shared that his ambition is to continue improving to become a better leader, develop a better understanding of how to work with others, manage conflict, and make profound decisions that benefit the students.
