Minenhle Sithole never saw herself embarking on a career in teaching, but here she is excelling in it and is about to become one of the best teachers. She claims that she did not choose teaching, but it chose her.
Testifying how her career in teaching began, she said that this was a calling, embarking on something you were born to do.
“To be honest, I did not choose this. I never considered becoming a teacher. I think it is true when they say, you do not choose teaching, it chooses you. I never saw myself teaching, but during the course, I fell in love with it. My high school teacher used to call me the teacher and I did not like it, little did I know,’’ she said.
She will be graduating with her Bachelor of Education in Senior and FET Cum Laude passed with Deans’ Merit Award at Durban University of Technology’s Midlands Campus in Pietermaritzburg on Monday, 13 May 2024.
“It indicates that you have travelled the journey with pride, gratitude, confidence, and, most importantly, excellence,’’ she said.
She shared that the DUT ENVISION 2030 living values and principles guided, inspired, and shaped her throughout her academic journey.
“Transparency, honesty, integrity, respect, and accountability principles have shaped me not only academically but in life and I will be able to apply them in my working environment and to teach my mentees about the importance of them,’’ she added.
The Empangeni born extended her gratitude to DUT Midlands, and lauded her mother for her support through thick and thin in her journey and she is happy that she made her proud.
“My mother, who has been my only support system, is overjoyed with the lady I have become. She could not believe it when she realised that all my hard work paid off. I will be eternally thankful for the chance provided by DUT Midlands,’’ she said.
The 24-year-old intends to earn her Honours and PhD in the same course shortly. She also advised first-year students to take full advantage of the facilities and services at their disposal. “Use the resources provided by the institution to better yourself and your life, and never allow intimidation to overcome you,’’ she concluded.
