Shannon Govender has finally achieved her childhood dream to make a profession in the medical field. She graduated Cum Laude for her Bachelor of Health Science Degree in Clinical Technology at the esteemed Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2024 Autumn Graduation Ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre, Durban, on Wednesday, 22 May 2024.
“I have always been enthusiastic about the medical field from a very young age and this field has allowed me to help patients through science and technology, especially with my line of work as an Embryologist,’’ she said.
The elated Govender (24) born in Chatsworth, Durban expressed how proud she was of herself for excelling in her academics.
“I am extremely ecstatic and proud of graduating Cum Laude as this is what I have been preparing for since the time I joined DUT so that has been rewarding for me as a student and knowing that all my hard work and sacrifices was worth it,’’ she said.
She mentioned respect, commitment, and compassion as among DUT ENVISION2030 Living values and principles, she familiarises herself with. “I resonate highly with these values and principles as they are the core fundamental aspects that are needed to work in the health sector,’’ she added.
Just like any journey, hers also encountered various challenges. Having to balance her internship and academics at the same time.” I was placed in Cape Town for my second-year Embryology internship at Groote Schuur Hospital. This was particularly difficult, especially being far away from my family. However, this had motivated me to excel in my academics,’’ she said.
Her parents were extremely excited for their daughter’s academic success. Further claiming that they have sacrificed a lot for her studies. “It is only through the support of my amazing parents that I have achieved this. Both my mum and dad have been invested in my studies and supported me throughout this long journey. So, they are my biggest supporters,’’ she added.
Govender is currently working as an Embryologist. She is already aiming for master’s degree and eventually a PhD in the future. One of her goals is to own a laboratory or fertility clinic to help couples facing infertility as well as bring more awareness on fertility preservation within South Africa for both men and women.
