The Department of Information Technology (IT) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) in partnership with the leading publisher of social games and interactive content in Africa, Carry 1st, will be hosting the Esports tournament, Tribe Campus Battle between students from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and DUT at the Ritson Campus Exam Hall, on Saturday, 04 March 2023.

Esport is a form of competition using video games, which often involves teams competing against each other in tournaments for a cash prize. Just like traditional sports, top gamers are constantly looking for the top positions in their game of choice.

At the anticipated online Tribe Campus Battle, the DUT Esports team will be taking on the team from UCT for a prize pool of R5000. The teams will be showcasing their gaming skills to establish who will excel in the FIFA and CODM games.

According to one of the organisers of this event, a DUT Information Technology Senior Lecturer, Mr Ebrahim Asmal the aim of hosting such an event is to expose DUT staff, students and community to the world of gaming. The event will not focus on playing the games but also the development and programming of new games.

“Connecting all participants with the game and the competitive ecosystem will boost the possibilities of a robust professional playing career for the guests who will attend. This event will expose gamers to possible careers in the future, which is in line with the DUT ENVISION2030 of producing graduates that are creative, innovative, entrepreneurial and adaptive to changes in the world,” said Asmal.

Asmal is confident that the event will be a success as the gamers are highly committed to Esports, saying winning is the core of participating in such events. He further added that at the event, Redbull will be on ground to provide free drinks to the students.

The Carry 1st Community Manager, Oluwasaanufunmi Ajayi commended the DUT Esports team for being part of the Tribe gaming community.

“The Tribe gaming community is open to all students of DUT that are enthusiastic about gaming and Esports. There are plenty of opportunities in the gaming scene and we try to expose students to the various opportunities through our community,” reiterated Oluwasaanufunmi.

He added that the Tribe gaming community runs on WhatsApp and it is open to all students of DUT. Students who are interested in joining, must click on the link to join: https://chat.whatsapp.com/FLtxfxk8CcQ0M99FGj13ZY

This event follows yet another exciting gamification day which was hosted by the IT Department at and Carry 1st, featuring the acclaimed South African rapper, Nasty C, at the Ritson Campus Exam Hall in November 2022.

During this event, DUT students, staff and guests had a chance to download the Call of Duty: Mobile (COD:M) which is a free-to-play game developed by TiMi Studio Group and published by Activision for Android and iOS. It was released on 01 October 2019. This was one of the largest mobile game launches in history, generating over 270 million downloads within a year. It is currently one of the Top10 mobile games in the world.

The event was a huge success with over 200 people attending and participating in the online gaming event. Participants had the opportunity to meet Nasty C, played the game against him and took pictures too.
