As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. Mnqobi Ngobese, DUT Communication’s editorial team member, recently engaged with the DUT Chess star, Lwazi Thusi to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT Sport Team?
A: “I joined in 2022.”
Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?
A: “Chess sparked my interest because it’s a game of strategy and decision-making, much like life. Every move teaches you to think ahead, weigh options, and adapt to new situations, and the skills that are directly transferable to real-life challenges. It’s about seeing the bigger picture, managing risks, and finding creative solutions, all while learning from mistakes and improving over time.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “My position on the team also carries a responsibility to provide support and to build a new family and motivate others, especially in tight matches where each point is crucial. By focusing on my own game while keeping an eye on the overall team’s progress, I help to maintain momentum and boost morale, ensuring that everyone stays focused and confident. My strategic decisions and preparation not only helps secure individual victories but also contributes to the team’s collective success, making every point I score vital for our overall performance.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A: “Boxing, I have always loved combat sports and always believed that as a man you are supposed to have basic knowledge when it comes to fighting; besides all that it increases endurance and makes you mentally strong as well as helps you to gain a skill.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “I have participated in the South African Open 2024. Even though I came second, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment in the tournament as it taught me lots of things while focusing on the game.”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?
A: “It’s vital for DUT to develop students in sports because it fosters a well-rounded education, promoting physical health, teamwork, and leadership skills that complement academic growth. Sports teach discipline, time management, and resilience, qualities that are invaluable both in the classroom and in the professional world. Additionally, representing DUT in sports helps to build the school spirit and pride, creating a sense of community and belonging. By supporting student athletes, DUT not only enhances its reputation but also prepares students to excel in all areas of life, balancing academics with physical and personal development.”
Q: Who is your sport role model and why?
A: “Daniil Dubov, although he is not the strongest chess player, I like his style as he always makes the game enthralling to watch.”
Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles do you associate with and why?
A: “I associate with integrity, respect and accountability. I associate myself with the values because they are the foundation of both my personal growth and effective teamwork. Integrity ensures that I stay true to my principles, always acting honestly and ethically, whether in competition or in everyday life. Respect allows me to value other perspectives and abilities, fostering a positive environment where collaboration and mutual understanding thrive. Accountability is crucial to me because it drives me to take responsibility for my actions, learning from mistakes and striving to improve my game. Together, these values not only define who I am as a student and athlete but also it helps me to contribute meaningfully to my team and community.”
Q: Do you see a future in chess?
A: “No, for me it is a hobby. As much as I love chess and I have a great potential, I play the game for the love of it as it helps me by sharpening my critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Chess also to improves my focus, patience, and resilience, also teaching players to adapt to changing situations and to learn from their mistakes. These skills are not only essential for success on the chessboard but also translate into real-life scenarios, whether it is in academics or professional settings, helping individuals approach challenges with a more analytical and thoughtful mindset.”
Q: As a DUT sport star, how does your role benefit your community?
A: “As a DUT sport star, my role benefits the community as I serve as a positive example of dedication, discipline, and teamwork. Throughout my involvement in sports, I aim to inspire others, especially younger students, to stay active, work hard, and pursue their goals with passion. Representing DUT in competitions also helps me to foster a sense of pride and unity within the community, showing that success comes not just from individual effort but from supporting each other. Beyond the field, I aim to be a mentor, encouraging others to develop not only their athletic abilities but also their character and life skills, such as resilience, responsibility, and respect. Ultimately, my role helps to build a stronger, more connected community where people strive for personal growth and collective success.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “Chess has taught me the value of strategic thinking, patience, and perseverance, skills I apply not only on the chessboard but in all aspects of my life. Just like in chess, where every move counts and requires careful planning, in life, I have learnt to think ahead, make informed decisions, and stay focused on my long-term goals. Chess has also taught me how to handle setbacks, as every game involves moments of failure that helps to provide valuable lessons for improvement. Ultimately, the discipline and mindset I have developed through chess has shaped me into a more thoughtful, resilient, and proactive individual, ready to tackle challenges both in and out of the classroom.”
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?
A: “To attract spectators to varsity sports, the university can create a lively, engaging atmosphere by hosting themed events, offering student group discounts, and promoting games through social media. Interactive experiences like halftime challenges or fan voting can enhance student involvement, while partnerships with local businesses can provide incentives like discounts for attendees. Highlighting athlete stories and organising alumni or community-focused events can help to build a stronger connection with the audience.”
