The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, which was built on five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are further supported by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. Recently, Phiwayinkosi Sibiya from the DUT Communications team engaged in a conversation with Zodidi Ndayi, Faculty Assistant in the Faculty of Arts and Design at DUT, to explore the significance of the Living Values Framework and ENVISION2030.
Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?
A: “As a Faculty Assistant under the Faculty of Arts and Design at DUT, I offer academic administrative support to faculty members and assist students with their inquiries and academic processes. My role involves ensuring that both faculty and students have access to the essential resources needed for a successful academic experience. Ultimately, I contribute to the smooth operation of academic functions, enabling faculty to focus on their teaching and research responsibilities.”
Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?
A: “I have been employed at DUT for over 10 years.”
Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?
A: “Integrity resonates the most with me. Integrity aligns with my personal values of fairness and doing what is right, especially in situations where I expect accountability and fairness, such as in professional or academic contexts where I value being treated justly for my efforts. It also reflects my desire to be a caring and honest individual.”
Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?
A: “The new DUT tagline, Creative, Distinctive, Impactful, captures the essence of innovation and excellence. It emphasises the university’s focus on fostering creativity, setting itself apart with unique approaches, and making a meaningful difference in the community and society. I appreciate how it aligns with the goal of inspiring students and staff to think outside the box and contribute to real-world change, which is vital for an institution aiming to leave a lasting mark.”
Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?
A: “I plan to actively engage with university initiatives, attend relevant workshops or seminars, and integrate the values of transparency, respect, and accountability into my daily work. I will also seek opportunities for collaboration and professional development to stay updated on evolving practices, ensuring that I contribute meaningfully to DUT’s vision while maintaining a strong commitment to excellence and fairness in all aspects of my role.”
Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?
A: “The one thing that most people may not know about me is that I have a deep passion for teaching and skill development, and I aspire to be recognised as a shaper of young minds. I find great fulfilment in guiding students and helping them unlock their potential.”

A: “The ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework will benefit DUT by fostering a culture of transparency, integrity, and respect, which can enhance collaboration and trust among staff, students, and the broader community. By prioritising values like professionalism, commitment, and compassion, the framework will help create an inclusive and supportive environment that encourages innovation and excellence, ultimately leading to improved academic outcomes and a stronger reputation for the university. This alignment will empower everyone at DUT to contribute meaningfully to the institution’s goals and create a lasting impact on society.”
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: “In my spare time, I enjoy reading and watching TV. Both activities allow me to relax, explore new ideas, gain knowledge, and immerse myself in different worlds and perspectives.”

A: I plan to make a positive impact at DUT as an academic administrator by enhancing operational efficiencies and supporting faculty and students in their academic endeavours. By promoting collaboration among departments, implementing effective policies, and advocating for resources that foster an inclusive learning environment, I aim to contribute to the university’s mission and ensure that both students and staff have the tools they need to succeed.”
Q: What is your daily motivation?
A: “My daily motivation is the belief that God is able which inspires me to face challenges with faith and resilience. This mindset encourages me to trust in my abilities and the possibilities that lie ahead.”
Q: What are your future goals at DUT?
A: “My future goals at DUT include becoming an academic who inspires students and fosters their personal and intellectual growth. I aim to develop innovative teaching methods and curricula that engages learners while contributing to a collaborative and supportive academic environment. Additionally, I hope to participate in initiatives that enhance the university’s impact in the community and promote a culture of continuous improvement and excellence.”
Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
A: “It would be to have the opportunity to positively impact and uplift the lives of as many students as possible through education and faith in God. I believe that empowering young minds can bring about transformative change in society, and I aspire to be a catalyst for that growth.”
