DUT FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCES LAUNCHES THE HIGH FLYERS ACADEMY

The Faculty of Applied Sciences at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) proudly launched its High Flyers Academy on Thursday, 07 November 2024, at the Rendezvous Restaurant on the Steve Biko Campus in Durban.

This initiative reflects the Faculty’s commitment to cultivating a community of high achievers, who are passionate about learning and dedicated to applying their skills to address real-world challenges. The Faculty of Applied Sciences High Flyers Academy aims to nurture adaptable graduates who are equipped to make a meaningful impact in their fields and contribute significantly to society.

The event was officially opened by Nivar Somaru, the Academic Development Practitioner at the Faculty of Applied Sciences. He welcomed the attendees and explained that the event was to celebrate the Faculty of Applied Sciences high-achieving students. “We are here to celebrate your achievements, hard work, and dedication to your studies,” said Somaru.

Professor Suren Singh, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, explained the purpose of the event: “We gather to celebrate an exciting milestone in the Faculty of Applied Sciences-the launch of the High Flyers Academy. This academy is not merely a programme; it is a bold step toward redefining excellence, innovation, and leadership within our faculty,” said Prof Singh.

He elaborated that the academy would open doors for exceptional students who embody academic rigour, creativity, and leadership potential. “Our intention is to support high-achieving students who have the potential to drive scientific progress, elevate our faculty and university, and ultimately make a meaningful impact on the world,” Prof Singh added.

For students, this academy represents an opportunity to be part of a prestigious community, joining an exclusive group of high achievers in Faculty of Applied Sciences with the aim of forming lifelong connections and building a professional network that will support them throughout their careers.

Prof Singh stated that by 15 December 2024, 14 students would have visited six international universities in Germany, China, the Philippines, and New Zealand as part of the international mobility programme, representing an advanced phase of the ENVISION 2030 strategy. “The investment for this initiative will be approximately R1 million, and the faculty hopes to double this commitment in 2025 specifically for the FAS High Flyers,” he expressed.

He further detailed the vision of the High Flyers Academy, which includes:

– Recognising and promoting excellence

– Developing future leaders

– Providing high-impact learning experiences

– Enhancing the institutional reputation

– Creating a lasting legacy

– Networking with industry leaders

– Establishing international links

– Serving as science ambassadors in the Faculty

“Together, through the High Flyers Academy, we are shaping not just the future of applied sciences but the future of South Africa and the world,” Prof Singh concluded.

Dr Mzwandile Khumalo, the Siyaphumelela Institutional Lead at DUT, congratulated the students on being recognised for their hard work and dedication. He explained that the university not only focuses on academic success but also ensures that students gain skills and achievements beyond the classroom. “We aim to produce well-rounded graduates who will contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.

Anil Salick led an ice-breaker and interactive session on leadership, personality, and relationships to help students understand themselves better. “Not everyone is meant to be a high achiever, but you can become one with courage, love, and passion for what you do,” Salick remarked. He then gave students an exercise to encourage them to think creatively. Salick motivated students to reflect on their passions, as this would take them far in life.

The guest speaker, Steven Nthambeleni Mabugana, Managing Director of Khanyitex, delivered a presentation titled: To whom much is given, much is required. He shared his personal journey and the obstacles he faced on his path to success. “The journey is not easy, but it is achievable if you are passionate about it. Seek advice, reassess your path, and understand that your journey will be unique,” said Mabugana.

Following the presentations shared, all the high-achieving students were awarded certificates and gifts in recognition of their hard work. Simran Bachu, a second-year Diploma student in Shipping and Logistics, expressed her excitement: “It was a thrilling and overwhelming experience. The event was perfectly coordinated, and all the speakers were motivating and inspiring. I feel extremely proud and honoured to have received recognition for my hard work and dedication,” she said jubilantly.

Nkalipho Mpanza, a second-year Diploma student, said, “This award means so much to me; it feels like a pat on the back from God for being zealous, disciplined, and determined in my pursuit of becoming a maritime professional. It reminds me to stay grounded, focused, and collaborate with my colleagues so more of us can receive such recognition from our department.”

Mpanza further expressed gratitude to the Maritime Department: “To the Maritime Department, I sincerely thank you for this recognition. I am very grateful to receive this award. I know you have many good intentions for all students in the maritime discipline, and I hope all those intentions become reality.”
