DUT EMPOWERS FEMALE LEADERS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE AND RESCUE

Throughout Women’s Month, the Department of Emergency Medical Care and Rescue at Durban University of Technology (DUT) proudly celebrated the remarkable achievements of women in our field. Their social media campaign spotlighted a diverse group of female role models, including current students, alumni, entrepreneurs, and pioneers in the EMS industry. These women have excelled in various roles, from paramedics to business owners, educators, and even the first PhD graduate from the department. Their stories exemplify the strength, resilience, and leadership that women bring to a traditionally male-dominated profession.

Speaking about the event was lecturer, Amy Elizabeth Lagesse, who explained that to culminate their celebrations, the Department of Emergency Medical Care and Rescue hosted an event designed not only to inspire but also to embody DUT’s Living Values.

“We were honoured to have Busi Arends, Principal of the College of Emergency Care in KwaZulu-Natal, as our guest speaker. Arends shared her journey from being an ambulance assistant to Senior Management, emphasising the importance of perseverance, respect, and self-belief,” she said.

Her message encouraged the students to remain steadfast in their pursuit of excellence, no matter the obstacles they encounter.

“The event was more than just a celebration-it was a platform to nurture an environment of respect, inclusion, and empowerment, values that are deeply ingrained in DUT’s vision. By showcasing the talents of our students and fostering a supportive community, we aimed to create a space where all voices are heard, and every individual feel valued,” added Lagesse.

She further indicated that as they reaffirm their commitment to fostering female leadership within the Emergency Medical Care and Rescue field. Aligned with DUT’s ENVISION2030, they continue to strive towards creating an inclusive and empowering environment for their students, ensuring that they are not only prepared for their professional roles but also equipped to be leaders and advocates for change.
