In the realm of academia, there are individuals whose journeys inspire not just through their achievements, but through their dedication to the craft of teaching and learning. Dr Nhlayisi Cedrick Baloyi stands as a testament to this ethos, with a trajectory that merges rich practical experience with scholarly pursuits.
Hailing from Nyavani village, nestled in the heart of Limpopo Province’s Collins Chabane Municipality, Dr Baloyi’s academic journey has been marked by a fervent pursuit of knowledge and a commitment to excellence. At 34 years of age, he currently serves as a senior lecturer in the Media Studies programme at the University of Limpopo (UL), where he imparts wisdom in radio broadcasting, journalism, and mass media research.
Dr Nhlayisi graduated Cum Laude for his Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2024 Autumn Graduation ceremony, which was held at the Indumiso campus, Pietermaritzburg on Monday, 13 May 2024.
Dr Baloyi’s journey into academia was preceded by a distinguished career in journalism and current affairs news production at the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) Munghana Lonene FM, spanning from 2014 to 2022. It was this immersive experience that laid the foundation for his transition into the realm of higher education, where he now shapes the minds of future media professionals.
His academic prowess is underscored by the attainment of a PhD in media studies from the University of Limpopo in 2021, a feat that reflects not only his scholarly aptitude but also his relentless pursuit of academic excellence. As a beneficiary of the South African Humanities Deans Association (SAHUDA) scholarship, in collaboration with the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) which funded his PhD studies, Dr Baloyi’s academic journey has been fortified by prestigious support.
Beyond his pedagogical endeavours, Dr Baloyi is a prolific researcher, with a repertoire of publications spanning journal articles and conference proceedings. His research interests encompass a diverse array of topics, including broadcasting, digital media, media and society, and Indigenous language media in Africa, reflecting his multifaceted approach to scholarship.
Yet, amidst his scholarly pursuits, Dr Baloyi remains grounded in values that are integral to the academic enterprise. He uses DUT’s ENVISION2030 principles, honesty, integrity, respect, and accountability as guiding principles, recognising their paramount importance in upholding the dignity of oneself and the institutions one represents.
However, Dr Baloyi’s journey has not been devoid of challenges. Balancing the demands of academia with the rigours of employment posed a formidable obstacle, yet his commitment to excellence saw him triumph, culminating in the attainment of Cum Laude in his recent Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education from DUT.
This achievement, Dr Baloyi attests, would not have been possible without the unwavering support of his spouse, who stood by him during the arduous journey, offering encouragement and understanding.
Looking ahead, Dr Baloyi harbours ambitions of further enriching his knowledge base, expressing a keen interest in pursuing a short course in Artificial Intelligence, a testament to his recognition of the imperative to adapt to technological advancements in an ever-evolving world.
With a steadfast resolve to contribute to the existing body of knowledge and aspirations of attaining a professorship before the age of 40, Dr Baloyi’s journey is emblematic of the transformative power of education and the unyielding spirit of those who dare to dream.
In imparting wisdom to first-year students, Dr Baloyi advocates for a blend of dedication, innovation, and a positive mindset-an ethos that has underpinned his own remarkable journey in academia.
As he continues to tread the path of scholarly pursuit, Dr Baloyi serves as a beacon of inspiration, illuminating the way for future generations of academics and media professionals alike.
