The Disability Rights Unit (DRU) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently hosted its much-anticipated Disability Annual Sports Day. The event aimed to promote inclusivity and celebrate the abilities of students with disabilities. The Disability Rights Unit collaborated with the following units to ensure the success of the event: Student Services and Development Unit, Student Housing and Residence Life Unit, and Sports Administration Unit. In faith of achieving greatness together the event was further sponsored by ZuriXpress and Redbull, the event garnered support from various stakeholders, including the newly elected Student Representative Council (SRC).
Mr L Sikhakhane (WIL Student at DRU) and Mr S Ngubane (DASA Executive) commenced the event by extending a warm welcome to all the guests and giving the speakers the platform accordingly. The ropes were then handed over to Mr Mpumelelo Shange, the Disability Sports administrative assistant, who then gave more context of the event and set the tone for the day.
One of the core aims of the Disability Annual Sports Day was to foster an inclusive environment that welcomes students with and without disabilities. The event sought to break barriers and promote understanding, showcasing the talents and abilities of all participating students.
Mrs F Hafajee, the Director of Student Services and Development Midlands, delivered a touching speech highlighting the purpose and significance of the day. She emphasised the importance of equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their physical abilities. Her words resonated with the audience, further reinforcing the spirit of inclusivity and support.
A highlight of the event was the message of support delivered by Minenhle Zikhali, a student with a disability. His inspiring words not only encouraged his fellow students but also served as a testament to the determination and resilience that individuals with disabilities possess. Zikhali’s message ignited a fire within the participants, motivating them to embrace their potential and strive for greatness.
The success of the Disability Annual Sports Day was made possible through collaborations and by sharing resources and expertise, the units orchestrated a seamless event that left a lasting impact on both participants and spectators alike. Their joint efforts exemplified the institution’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students. The event was a resounding success and all the students felt included, and part of supportive DUT community. The Disability Rights Unit hopes for greater collaborations and sponsorships in the future centred around the university’s living values because together they aim to achieve more.
