Luyanda Loraine Bingwa is beyond excited to be graduating in her number-crunching field for her Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Business and Information Management at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2024 Spring Graduation ceremony, taking place at the Durban Exhibition Centre, on Thursday, 19 September 2024.
“This trip has been extremely satisfying, allowing me to delve deeply into my subject of study. Throughout this journey, I have learnt the true definition of perseverance, as the hurdles I faced demanded devotion and resilience,” said an elated Bingwa.
She explained that the complexities of her study frequently prompted her to seek assistance from mentors and colleagues, teaching her the value of asking for aid when needed.
“Overcoming these challenges has not only improved my academic abilities, but also prepared me for future endeavours in both my personal and professional life. Graduating this Spring ceremony marks the end of one chapter and the start of another,” she expressed.
As a student, Bingwa had faced numerous hurdles that challenged her perseverance and drive. One of the most aggravating challenges was overcoming writer’s block. “Sometimes I could not find the right concepts or ideas, which hampered my development and made me doubt my talents. Nonetheless, the challenge taught me significant lessons. I discovered that positive developments require time, and that research and writing should not be hastened,” she replied.
For Bingwa, her family ‘s reaction means the world to her. “My mother, Sibongile Bingwa, was very appreciative and tearful, expressing her gratitude for being alive to see my dreams come true. Realising that my determination and diligence provided delight to my family, particularly my mother, made my achievement even more significant,” she shared happily.
Bingwa highlighted on her dissertation titled: “A Framework for Supporting Technological Innovation by Manufacturing Small and Medium Enterprises in KwaZulu-Natal.”
“The study adds to the body of knowledge by exploring how SMEs may leverage ICT to expand their operations and compete. It also aims to improve the overall performance and sustainability of South African SMEs by providing practical guidance and mechanisms. Furthermore, by encouraging innovation in these businesses, the study has the potential to stimulate the local economy, generate employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth in the region,” she said.
In terms of her study plans, Bingwa is looking forwarding to publishing more research articles and book chapters.
Her advice to a first-year student who is interested in pursuing a similar career is to use their distinctive viewpoint as a courage.
“Stay committed and enthusiastic, apply for scholarships, and make use of accessible assistance and structures. Accept every chance for learning and progress, and don’t be hesitant to seek for assistance or mentoring,” she added.
Bingwa expressed her appreciation for the continuous encouragement and assistance from everyone during her time pursuing her PhD.
“Ayanda Luthando Bingwa, my daughter, regularly served as a source of inspiration and motivation for me. Equally important is the guidance provided by my supervisor, Dr Musawenkosi Ngibe. His support played a crucial role in navigating the challenges I faced during my research,” she said.
