The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Business and Information Management graduate, Bongeka Princess Gumbi aspires to leverage her expertise in business strategies and information technology to thrive in various roles, from leadership positions in established organizations to entrepreneurial ventures.
The 30-year-old walked the stage at the prestigious Autumn Graduation Ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre this morning (22 May 2023). She was awarded Cum Laude for her academic excellent in Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Information Management.
According to Gumbi, academic rigor and depth of knowledge offered by DUT have been instrumental in shaping her understanding of business and information management.
“One of the most remarkable aspects of my journey has been the unwavering support and guidance provided by the faculty and staff at DUT. Their expertise, coupled with a genuine commitment to student success, created an environment conducive to learning and growth. Whether in lectures, tutorials, or one-on-one consultations, I always felt encouraged to explore new ideas and push the boundaries of my knowledge,” she explained.
Throughout her academic journey, the Hlokozi born, South coast, encountered several hurdles that put her abilities and determination to the test. One of the most significant challenges was balancing studies with work commitments, which required me to juggle multiple responsibilities and deadlines.
“I was working as an intern and simultaneously running my own business The ability to multitask became essential, and while it was undoubtedly difficult at times, I refused to let it deter me from pursuing my goals. Despite my best efforts, I found myself in a situation where I still owe the university to this day. Navigating through this financial burden while striving to excel academically was undoubtedly one of the toughest challenges I have encountered,” she narrated.
To a first-year student considering a career path in Business and Information Management, Gumbi’s advise them to focus on building a solid foundation of knowledge and skills while remaining adaptable to the evolving landscape of technology and business. She also emphasised the importance of Engaging actively in your coursework, seeking to understand the fundamental principles of both business management and information technology. Take advantage of opportunities for hands-on experience, such as internships, projects, and extracurricular activities, to gain practical skills and insights.
After completing her Post Graduate Diploma in Business and Information Management, She feels strongly about expanding her knowledge in Business and Information Management. Pursuing a Master’s degree aligns perfectly with her academic and career aspirations.
