ABE BAILEY WINNER REFLECTS ON LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCES AS A HOMEOPATHY STUDENT

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is proudly celebrating the achievements of Siphesihile Mchunu, a master’s student in Homeopathy and recipient of the prestigious Abe Bailey Bursary, who has represented DUT on an international stage in the United Kingdom (UK). The 24 year old from Mooi River in the KZN Midlands, commenced his academic journey at DUT in 2020. Just four years later, he graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Homeopathy at the 2024 Autumn Graduation ceremony, commemorating a remarkable milestone in his academic career.

The Abe Bailey Travel Bursary recognises outstanding students who demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities and strong service ethics. Siphesihle Mchunu was honoured to receive this esteemed bursary in 2024, acknowledging his remarkable achievements and dedication to excellence.

Mchunu also reflected on his three-week journey that started from Cape Town to the United Kingdom, where he had visited several prominent cities, which are London, Oxford, Cambridge, and Scotland and noted that it was a valuable learning experience. He stated that his academic excellence, leadership skills, community service, and personal qualities earned him a place on the Abe Bailey Tour 2024, allowing him to represent DUT, his parents, and himself.

“I had a busy schedule, visiting many places every day. I met important officials from the House of Lords and Parliament and toured the Old Bailey court with UK lawyers. Every day was special, and I made the most of my time. I also visited some of the world’s best universities, which were very different from those in South Africa. Their technology is more advanced, they also value their culture, and every building has a purpose and meaning,” he said.

He also mentioned that watching the three magnificent plays-Hamilton, Les Misérables, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream-was another unforgettable highlight of his incredible journey. The exceptional talent, stunning sets, and captivating storylines left a lasting impression on him.

“I had daily discussions and debates which were a highlight of the trip. We shared thoughts on various topics, from politics to social issues, while dining, walking, or traveling. The conversations broadened my perspective, helping me to see things differently. I gained new insights, especially on politics and parliamentary systems which sparked my interest and encouraged me to engage in meaningful discussions,” he explained.

He advised to first-year students is to put in their best effort from the start and be committed to everything they do. He recommended working hard, participating in extracurricular activities, and developing their skills. He also encouraged anyone considering applying for a similar experience to do so, saying that the world is waiting for them. He emphasised that everyone wants to grow and learn and expressed the importance of being grateful for and appreciative of any opportunities that come their way.

“Returning to South Africa, I felt empowered and stronger. I am forever grateful to my parents for investing in my education and providing unconditional support. A special thanks go to Ashley Ross, my professor and supervisor, and the entire faculty for their tireless encouragement, guidance, and faith in my abilities throughout my academic journey,” added Mchunu.

He concluded by expressing his heartfelt gratitude to DUT for turning his dream into a reality. He indicated that as a first-time traveller beyond KwaZulu-Natal and outside of South Africa, he shared that this experience had been a game-changer, opening his eyes to a world of endless possibilities and forever changing his perspective. He shared that the core values and principles of DUT had served as a guiding force in his personal development, shaping his behaviour and character.
