On 10 March 2025, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) welcomed a distinguished delegation from the Ethiopian Ministry of Education. The visit aimed to benchmark DUT’s infrastructure, engage with innovators, and gain valuable insights into the initiatives that drive innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Education, headquartered in Arada Sub-City, Addis Ababa, is responsible for formulating policies, strategies, and programmes for general and higher education. It oversees curriculum development, sets educational standards, and ensures the implementation of a national qualification framework to support the country’s broader development goals.

The visit was attended by key DUT representatives, including Centre for Social Entrepreneurship (CSERI)Director: Mr Solomon Nyamurima, Reinforced & Moulded Plastics Technology Station: Director Dr Avinash Ramsaroop, Technology Transfer and Commercialization Specialist: Dr Farai Dziike, Ms Nomnikelo Lundall, Mr Sundeep Singh, Mr Daniel Vilakazi, Ms. Thandokuhle Luthuli, Ms Nonkululeko Khuzwayo, Ms Zimbili Shelembe, and Ms Snelisiwe Hlongwane. The Ethiopian Ministry of Education delegation comprised Dr Serawit Melkato, Dr Teshome Daniel, Mr Habtamu Abafoge, Mr Daulos Getachew, Mr Amare Kassani, and Ms Victoria Mamabolo.

CSERI Director Mr Solomon Nyamurima officially welcomed the delegation, setting the tone for a day of knowledge exchange and collaboration. Dr Avinash Ramsaroop provided an overview of the work conducted by the Reinforced & Moulded Plastics Technology Station, followed by a presentation from Ms. Nomnikelo Khuzwayo on behalf of DUT’s Technology Transfer and Innovation (TTI) unit. Mr Nyamurima concluded the presentations with an overview of CSERI’s initiatives.

The delegation was then taken on a tour of the Technology Station and entrepreneurship space, offering them a first-hand look at DUT’s pioneering innovations and technological advancements. This immersive experience highlighted the university’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and entrepreneurial growth.

In addition to gaining insights from DUT’s initiatives, the Ethiopian delegation shared perspectives from their own experiences and expertise. Dr Teshome Daniel, Head of Institutional Linkage (HETRIIL) and Technology Transfer, delivered a vote of thanks, expressing appreciation for DUT’s hospitality and knowledge-sharing. His remarks reinforced the role of collaboration in enhancing innovation and strengthening the education sector.

The visit marked a significant milestone in strengthening partnerships and fostering collaboration between DUT and the Ethiopian Ministry of Education. It highlighted the transformative power of exchanging ideas and expertise, laying the groundwork for future engagements that will enrich academia, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
