DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT chess star, Ntuthuko “Shylockmyth” Mdunge to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Qualification: Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BEngTech) in Electronics and Computer Engineering

Q:  When did you join the DUT Sport Team?

A: “I joined the team in 2023.”

Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “I started playing when I was in primary school, a lot of people at my school played it. I instantly fell in love with the chess, when I got to university I got to play with very good chess players. This made me love it more as I got to learn more chess moves as well as techniques.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “My favourite opening is the four knights scotch. I am a very positional and tactical player, I have helped the team by sharing some of my techniques with them. In some of my games while my opponent is playing I would be thinking about positional and tactical strategies in order to confuse, trick and ultimately conquer my opponent.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I am also interested in rugby because I used to play it at primary and high school. I am also interested in sailing, I feel like it’s a cool and fun sport.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “I have played in the South Africa Chess SA Open in 2024, which was a national tournament.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?

A: “I believe that it helps to enhance the physical and mental well-being of an individual in any particular sport. In my experience it also improves academic performance, fosters personal development, life skills and promotes university reputation as well as its community engagement.”

Q: Who is your sport role model and why?

A: “It is Mr Bhekinkosi Mgobhozi, who is my coach. He is a very strong player and he is a number 25 chess player in South Africa. I really love watching his games. Mr Mgobhozi is a very positional player whom I’ve really learned a lot from, this has improved my chess tactical moves and techniques. Through his teaching and coaching, I believe that he has shaped me into becoming a good chess player.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles do you associate with and why?

A: “I associate myself with all of the ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles. I feel like all of the DUT values align with my character as an individual that is focused and goal driven. I am a person that shares compassion and respect with everyone at DUT.”

Q: Do you see a future in chess?

A: “Yes most definitely, I do wish to become a titled player one day. I also wish to become a chess coach and coach for free in rural communities.”

Q: As a DUT sport star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “As a DUT sport star, my role benefits my community by inspiring young people, promoting healthy lifestyles, and engaging in community development through sports. I serve as a positive role model, mentor, and ambassador for DUT and my community.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Sport has had a profoundly positive impact on my life, teaching me valuable skills such as discipline, hard work, and teamwork. It has also helped me develop my physical, mental well-being, build confidence, lasting friendships and connections. Overall, sport has shaped me into a more resilient, focused, and determined individual.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?

A: “DUT can host more sports events and invite more people to participate in all different kinds of sports events that will take place. They may also run a strong social media platform that will promote all sports events and also create a safe environment in the sports venues.”
