The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Department of Biomedical and Clinical Technology (BMCT) collaborated with the Department of Sport Studies to host their inaugural Sport Day at Curries Fountain on Friday, 1 November 2024.
In her welcoming remarks, Dr Nonhlanhla Mbatha, the Head of the Department (HOD – BMCT), briefly outlined the event’s purpose.
“This time is perfect for students to de-stress from exam pressures and academic responsibilities. Also, to have a bond with them outside lecture rooms and be one family,’’ said Dr Mbatha.
Dr Mbatha also extended commended her team, as well as the Department of Sport Studies, lecturers Dr Sameera Hussain and Ms Colleen Lotz and their third-year students who also played an instrumental role in organising the event.
“The support and brilliant ideas from all of them were really appreciated. To see this turnout in our first-ever sport day is amazing,’’ she added.
Final-year Bachelor of Sports Science and Management student, Bawinile Mathenjwa, who was also a member of the organising team, said it was a lot of fun working with BMCT and as Sport Science and Management students they feel very honoured to share their input.
“Being part of this event is very exciting because it promotes teamwork and togetherness. It was a great journey from the meetings to the final product it was awesome. During the preparations we learnt a lot from each other, and I am happy that we were able to assist,’’ said Mathenjwa.
The second-year Clinical Technology Bachelor student Akhona Ngubane, hailing from Cato Ridge said that the event was so helpful and fun.
“This was great; I got a chance to distress from the academics especially exams. I have learnt the importance of teamwork, because the entire sports activities required us to work together,’’ said Ngubane.
The health staff and students also provided free health checkups throughout the event. The vibrant event had various games ranging from soccer, sack race, leg jumping and relay. The winners were awarded with trophies.
