DUT IMPACT

Durban University of Technology (DUT) officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, comprising five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are underpinned by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT Communications team member, Phiwayinkosi Sibiya recently engaged in a conversation with NtsikeleloNhlenyama, the Residence Life Officer, to delve into the living values framework and ENVISION2030.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?

A: “As a Residence Life Officer (RLO) at DUT, my role is to create an inclusive and supportive environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and personally. I am responsible for overseeing residence programs that promote student welfare, managing the daily operations within residences, and ensuring that all residence activities align with DUT’s strategic objectives and vision. My role is multifaceted-resolving student grievances, Supervising Resident Advisors, Student Residence Assistance (RAs) and House Committees, Residence Life Networks which include Green Campus Initiative(GCI) Insika Mens Networks (INN) and Qhakaza Ladies Network (QLN) and fostering a positive, resilient institutional culture. Drawing from my experience as House Committee Chairperson and Central Housing President, I work to ensure that our residences are not only places of accommodation but vibrant communities of learning and personal growth.”

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?

A: “I have had the honour of being part of the DUT family since 2017 when I served as Class Representative, Faculty Representative, even had an opportunity to travel to the Chinese winter camp through camp Confucius Institute. Over the years, my involvement has deepened, and I have taken on various leadership roles within residence life. From my time as House Committee Project Officer, Chairperson and later Central Housing President, I have gained invaluable experience that has prepared me for my current role as a Residence Life Officer, where I continue to contribute to the well-being and growth of our students.”

Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?

A: “Accountability is the value that resonates most with me. In my role as a Residence Life Officer, accountability is at the core of everything I do. Whether it’s addressing student concerns, ensuring the effective implementation of programmes, or mentoring young leaders, I believe in taking responsibility for my actions and outcomes. This commitment to accountability ensures that I maintain the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in all aspects of my work, which ultimately benefits the students and the wider DUT community.”

Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?

A: “The tagline encapsulates what I strive to bring to my work every day. Creativity is essential in designing innovative programs that engage students and support their holistic development. Being distinctive means offering unique experiences that make our residences more than just places to stay-they are hubs of learning and collaboration. And impact is what I aim for: whether through leadership development, mental health awareness, or conflict resolution, my goal is to leave a lasting, positive influence on the lives of the students I serve.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?

A: “I plan to integrate the ENVISION2030 Living Values into all residence activities by aligning our programmes with the values of transparency, respect, and accountability. This includes regular reviews of residence policies to ensure they support these values and creating opportunities for students to engage in discussions around these principles. Moreover, I will work closely with my colleagues across various Units and Departments to ensure that residence life remains aligned with the broader strategic goals of DUT, particularly in fostering an environment where fairness, compassion, and excellence thrive.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?

A: “Many people might not know that I have a deep commitment to community development beyond my role at DUT. I am actively involved in mentoring young people in my community, helping them discover their potential through leadership training and education. This passion for development fuels my work at DUT, as I believe that empowering young people is one of the most impactful ways to create positive, lasting change.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?

A: “The ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework will ensure that DUT remains a values-driven institution. By embedding values like transparency, accountability, and respect into all aspects of university life, we are creating an environment where students and staff alike feel supported and valued. This framework will enhance the overall student experience by fostering a culture of inclusivity, fairness, and excellence, which are critical to student success and institutional growth.”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: “In my spare time, I enjoy staying active through outdoor activities, reading about leadership and community development, and spending quality time with my family. I also have a passion for mentoring young people, which I pursue both within DUT and in my community. Guiding others and helping them unlock their potential is something that brings me great joy and fulfilment.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?

A: “My goal is to create a lasting impact by continuing to advocate for student-centred programmes that foster academic excellence, personal development, and mental health awareness. I aim to build on the progress we’ve made in residence life by expanding leadership development initiatives, promoting student engagement in university activities, and ensuring that our residences are safe, inclusive, and empowering spaces for all students.”

Q: What is your daily motivation?

A: “My daily motivation comes from my faith in God, knowing that I am called to serve with purpose and excellence. Colossians 3:23 reminds us, ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.’ This scripture pushes me to give my best in everything I do, knowing that my efforts are part of a greater plan. I am motivated to lead with humility, to be a vessel of God’s love, and to impact others positively, trusting that my journey aligns with His purpose for my life. Every day is an opportunity to glorify God through my actions and to serve others with integrity and compassion.”

Q: What are your future goals at DUT?

A: “In addition to continuing to innovate in residence life by expanding leadership and development programmes, I am also deeply committed to my academic journey. One of my future goals is to further my studies, with the ambition to achieve at least a doctorate level. I believe that continued education will not only enhance my ability to contribute meaningfully to DUT but also serve as an inspiration to the students I mentor. By achieving this milestone, I aim to demonstrate the power of persistence and lifelong learning, while aligning my personal growth with DUT’s vision of excellence and impact.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?

A: “If I were granted one wish, it would be for every student at DUT to have access to the support and resources they need to reach their full potential. I believe that by removing barriers to success-whether they are financial, emotional, or academic-we can create a more equitable and empowering environment for all students.”
