Durban University of Technology, Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, Department of Information and Corporate Management under the leadership of Dr Smangele Moyane: Head of Department has secured over R13 million in funding from the Finance and Accounting Services Sector Education and Training Authority (FASSET).
This funding is going to provide extensive relief for students that have been burdened with historical debts and it will also fund internships that will improve students’ career prospects through beneficial industry experience. The funding as explained by Dr Moyane is twofold, it targets both hands-on industry training and financial relief for students.
- Debt Relief Fund-A portion of R2 million of the funding will benefit students who are struggling with historical debt. This will ease major financial burdens, allowing the students to focus fully on their studies without the constant stress of their financial challenges.
- In-Service Training-In addition to the debt relief, FASSET extended another R7 million for in-service training. This amount will fund internships for 110 students, this will help students to gain practical, industry-specific experience that will help them get employment.
Speaking to Dr Moyane she said that the funding will provide their students with the opportunity to continue with their studies. “The support from FASSET will provide students with the opportunity to continue their education and focus on academic success, rather than worrying about past debts,” said Dr Moyane.
Professor Oludayo Olugbara, the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, said that this is a significant milestone that everyone must imitate in all divisions. “This is a significant milestone that we must all copycat in all bifurcations. It is even more gratifying to work assiduously to contribute our allotment to the university rather than fighting each other. The Faculty would like to sincerely thank Dr Moyane for her excellent work,” said Prof Olugbara.
The Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Thandwa Mthembu, along with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Teaching and Learning, Dr Azwitevhelwi Nevhutalu extended their congratulatory message to Dr Moyane and the faculty for this achievement.
A call for applications has been posted across all DUT and Faculty social media channels. Students who are interested in the in-service internship opportunities are encouraged to apply before the closing date.
All applications are to be directed to Ms Samukelisiwe Phokoye, a lecturer and Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) coordinator, who is facilitating the process.
