On Thursday, 19 September 2024, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) will host its highly anticipated Spring Graduation ceremony, marking a significant milestone for its graduating students. One of the outstanding achievers, Saveer Brady Nundhlall, will be honoured for his remarkable accomplishments, graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics, and will be the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award.
Nundhlall’s exceptional academic performance and dedication to his studies have earned him this distinguished recognition, reflecting his potential to make a profound difference in the field of healthcare. The 22-year-old from Kharwastan, Durban, attended Escombe Primary School for his primary education, completing it in 2014. He then attended Wingen Heights Secondary School, where he matriculated in 2019. He began his tertiary studies in 2020.
“When I got the news that I will be graduating Cum Laude with the Dean’s Merit Award, I felt a sense of accomplishment because I knew I gave it my all. It is truly an honour to receive such a prestigious award. I also believe that the harder you work the better you perform,” he narrated.
His goal in pursuing Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics was to make a positive impact on the lives of those with physical impairments. He also shared the importance of the devices used in his field, which play a crucial role in increasing patients’ quality of life. These devices are not only improving physical functionality but also boost patients’ confidence and overall well-being.
He emphasised the significance of embracing DUT’s living values, particularly highlighting the core values of honesty, integrity, and respect. He shared that honesty forms the foundation of trust between students and lecturers, integrity guides moral and ethical behaviour, and respect fosters fairness and compassion towards others, regardless of their circumstances. By upholding these values, Nundhlall believes students can create a positive and supportive community.
“My family is ecstatic, and they expressed how proud they are of my accomplishments as I am the first person in the family to achieve a Dean’s Merit Award,” he added. His goal was to complete his degree with the best possible results and it has now come to life.
He is currently employed at Jeremy Kriek & Son, located in Berea, where they specialise in custom orthotics and prosthetics. He also stated that he is gaining invaluable experience and skills in his role.
“If I had to offer advice to a first-year student pursuing the same career, I would say that they must start by clarifying their motivations and envisioning their future in this field. Set clear short-term and long-term goals and work tirelessly to achieve them. Persevere through challenging times, keeping your ultimate objective in mind. I owe my success to the unwavering support of my loved ones, who inspired me to excel daily,” he concluded.
