DUT SIYAHAMBA SOLAR BOAT CREW IS THE ONLY SOUTH AFRICAN AND AFRICAN TEAM AT THE 2024 MONACO ENERGY BOAT CHALLENGE

The team from Durban University of Technology (DUT), led by Professor Ian Lazarus along with Eugene Zeelie, Daanish Meeran, Kereshnie Naganna and Steven Ellis, has been diligently preparing the ground-breaking Siyahamba Solar Boat for the prestigious 11th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge (MEBC) which is currently taking place. Hosted in Monaco and organised by the Yacht Club de Monaco in collaboration with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, this major international competition selected DUT as one of its 15 finalists from a pool of 120 global entries.

DUT is the only South African university competing in Monaco and DUT Siyahamba will be the only solar boat representing the African continent. The DUT DNA is people-centred and engaged; innovative and entrepreneurial; and DUT Siyahamba reflects this and epitomises the DUT ENVISION2030 strategy.

The DUT Siyahamba Solar Boat represents a first in African innovation and is poised to make waves at the event, beginning with the physical races on Thursday, 04 July 2024. Kereshnie Naganna, a member of the DUT crew, expressed her excitement about the vibrant atmosphere at the MEBC, describing it as a dynamic gathering of teams, industry experts and enthusiasts united by a passion for sustainable marine technology. She emphasised the event’s role in celebrating innovation, sustainability and collaborative spirit, making it a truly memorable experience for all participants.

Following three days dedicated to technical inspections and preparations, the stage is set for the races to commence, marking a pivotal moment for the DUT team. Naganna shared her team’s enthusiasm for the upcoming challenges, highlighting their readiness for the start of the races on Thursday, 04 July 2024. The event will conclude on Saturday, 06 July 2024, showcasing cutting-edge advancements and fostering international collaboration in the realm of sustainable marine technology. The staff and students of DUT wishes the DUT Siyahamba crew the best of luck as they brave the waters in Monaco representing DUT, South Africa and the African continent.
