Zakithi Mpungose, a Recruitment Administrator at the eThekwini Municipality’s Human Capital servicing the Health Department, acknowledged hard work as her recipe for her academic success. She had graduated Cum Laude with an Advanced Diploma in Management Sciences specialising in Human Resources Management (HRM) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2024 Autumn Graduation that was held at the Olive Convention Centre (OCC) on Saturday, 25 May 2024.
The 33-year-old from Ntendeka Village, in Ulundi KwaZulu-Natal had to juggle the roles of being an employee, a student, and a mother during her academic journey. Mpungose said her journey with DUT has been both challenging and rewarding.
“Working and studying at the same time was a bit of a challenge. I also had to take care of my sons, help them with their schoolwork, and be present as a mom in all circumstances. My younger son was admitted to the hospital twice, so I had to be strong for him while excelling in my studies and performing well at work,” she said.
Mpungose said her family was very excited to learn the news that she had obtained Cum Laude and that this had reflected her dedication, hard work, and commitment to academic excellence.
“I had been exposed to different Human Resources topics where I had gained a deeper understanding of the field which had enabled me to grow both in a personal and professional capacity,” said Mpungose.
On why she chose to study Human Resources she had stated that she had always had an interest in working closely with other people and Human Resources played a crucial role in shaping organisational strategies and policies and aims to study further and pursue her Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resources Management.
She advised those who are hoping to embark on a similar career path to have strong communication, problem-solving, interpersonal skills and keep abreast on the latest trends, practices, and regulations within the industry. “Take initiatives, ask questions, seek feedback, and look for opportunities to learn and grow in their roles,” she said.
