In the heart of Umlazi CC, a place where hope is often overshadowed by adversity, a young individual emerged from the shadows, armed with determination and a thirst for knowledge. Andile Amahle Cele’s journey through university was no ordinary one, it was a testament to resilience, perseverance, and the power of supportive communities.
Andile Amahle Cele (21), student from the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Faculty of Accounting and Informatics graduated Cum Laude for his Diploma in Internal Auditing at the DUT 2024 Autumn Graduation ceremony, which took place at the Olive Convention Centre on Thursday evening, 23 May 2024.
As a recent graduate, Cele’s path was anything but smooth. Like many, the journey began with doubts and challenges. A stumble during the first year, marked by a disappointing grade on a Financial Accounting test, could have derailed Cele’s aspirations. However, in the face of adversity, friendships blossomed. Together with supportive friends, late-night study sessions became a norm, transforming doubts into determination and setbacks into stepping stones.
The road to success was not without its obstacles. The demanding academic workload often tested Cele’s resolve. Yet, through meticulous time management and unwavering commitment, Cele emerged victorious, graduating Cum Laude. The achievement was not just a personal triumph but a beacon of hope for an entire community.
The moment of validation came unexpectedly, with an email announcing Cele’s academic accolade. The revelation ignited a wave of celebrations, not just on personal social media but also on professional platforms like LinkedIn, where Cele’s achievement garnered widespread recognition.
“I was thrilled to receive an email congratulating me for my Cum Laude, I had no idea that I was going to get it. I had checked my student portal quite a few times and all I could see was a disappointing ‘PASS’. So, after the email I quickly went to check again and there it was, the thing that solidifies my academic commitment. I shared it on my WhatsApp status where I received many congratulations, but LinkedIn is where it blew up, today my post there has over 1000 likes,” reiterated Cele.
Amidst the jubilation, there were moments of realisation. Cele’s family, though supportive, initially didn’t grasp the significance of graduating Cum Laude. Yet, through explanation, they joined in celebrating Cele’s academic prowess, recognizing the rarity and prestige of such an achievement.
Cele’s journey took an unexpected turn when Internal Auditing, initially a second choice, captured his heart. Mr Greenham’s influence played a pivotal role in kindling Cele’s passion for the field, steering them towards a path of purpose and fulfilment.
With sights set on furthering his studies by doing his Advanced Diploma followed by an Honours in Internal Auditing and a career trajectory aimed at the pinnacles of the profession, Cele’s aspirations know no bounds.
Guided by the mantra, “Brace yourself, there will be good times and bad times, and you will fall, just make sure that when you do you only fall forward,” Cele’s journey serves as an inspiration a testament to the power of resilience, perseverance, and unwavering determination.
In this moment of triumph, Cele extends heartfelt gratitude to mentors like Dr. Moodley, Mr. Greenham, and Ms. Qeke, whose unwavering support and guidance paved the way for his success. Their influence will continue to inspire generations to come, leaving an indelible mark on the fabric of Cele’s journey and beyond.
As Cele steps into the next chapter of his life, the echoes of his journey resonate a reminder that with resilience, determination, and a supportive community, the sky is not the limit, but merely the beginning of limitless possibilities.
