Recognised for her academic excellence was Nishika Naidoo (21) who graduated Cum Laude for her Bachelor of Applied Science in Food Science and Technology at the DUT 2024 Autumn Graduation ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre, on Tuesday, 21 May 2024.
She described her academic journey as challenging in numerous ways, pushing her to excel academically while navigating personal and professional growth. Graduating Cum Laude stood as a testament to her dedication and hard work she put into her studies.
“My journey at DUT was truly transformative, marking one of the most memorable phases of my life thus far. It wasn’t just about academic learning; it was about holistic growth-emotionally, physically, and socially. The friendships I forged during this time are invaluable treasures that I cherish dearly,” said Naidoo.
One of the core principles she resonates deeply with from her DUT experience was commitment. She firmly believed that hard work and dedication paved the way for her success.
“While my journey at DUT was filled with rewarding experiences, it also had its share of challenges. The transition to online learning during my first year was mentally demanding, as it required a different level of discipline and adaptation from traditional classroom settings,” added Naidoo.
She indicated that her passion for Food Science stemed from its captivating blend of two of her favourite domains; food and science. Looking ahead, she is eager to continue her educational journey part-time next year, focusing on areas related to production or quality system management.
In the long run, my career aspirations align with making a meaningful impact through my work. I aspire to work for organisations like the World Food Programme, where I can contribute to societal welfare and support communities and countries in need.
To first-year students, her advice was to stay focused, work diligently, and commit to their education. Naidoo felt avoiding distractions and staying true to their goals would not only set a strong foundation for their academic journey but also prepare them for future successes.
Currently, Naidoo works as a Quality Control Graduate at Kerry in Hammarsdale, where she plays a crucial role in assessing product quality post-production, ensuring adherence to high standards and customer satisfaction.
