MDLULI’S PASSION FOR INTEGRATING SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS LED HIM TO PURSUE MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AT DUT

Being an educator assistant in his community in Ladysmith in 2020 inspired Sikhanyiso Mdluli to pursue and to complete his Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Mechanical Engineering at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).

Mdluli crossed the stage at DUT 2024 Autumn Graduation ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre. He received his top-class degree on Monday, 20 May 2024.

The 23-year-old from Kleinfontein, Ladysmith, did not just graduate ordinarily this Autumn season; he also bagged the degree Cum Laude.

“It was a great honour for me to have graduated with Cum Laude. It brings pride to my loved ones who have supported me through unfavourable and challenging times. This proves that hard work pays off,” said the elated Mdluli.

Initially, Mechanical Engineering wasn’t Mdluli’s dream; he wanted to pursue a medical career. However, his passion and curiosity for Mechanical Engineering started to develop when he was working as an educator assistant. He became intrigued by integrating science and mathematics in designing, constructing, and testing mechanical systems and structures to enhance human life.

Mdluli says his academic journey at DUT had not been easy. He had to overcome challenges for him to get to this point.

“The outset of my tenure at DUT presented numerous challenges and frustrations. The transition to online learning due to COVID-19 and adjusting to a new environment. I needed to introspect and understand my strengths, weaknesses, and capabilities to establish short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals,” he said.

He further mentioned that Engineering demands more effort, and it often required completing copious assignments, reports, and examinations within tight deadlines. “This is when time management played a crucial role. Furthermore, seeking assistance from peers and lecturers was paramount, as one’s growth is intertwined with communal support,” explained Mdluli.

Currently, Mdluli is enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering Honours programme in Mechanical Engineering at DUT. He also plans to pursue a Master’s degree after his Honours studies. He also plans to have extensive experience in various industrial settings, specialising in the design and construction of Mechanical Engineering systems.
