Emergency Medical Care and Rescue (EMC) unit at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently hosted a two-day orientation for their first-year students.

The first day of the orientation had two sessions. The first session was held at Ritson campus which was where the ‘meet and greet’ took place. There were also speakers from various DUT support unit who presented about the services they offered. For the second session, there was a campus scavenger hunt.

Further into the programme, EMC Head of Department (HOD), Mr Sagie Naguran delivered a speech to welcome the students to the programme and introduced the staff members working at the unit.

For day two, the students were taken to Cato Ridge for physical drills, a hike, and a simulation of a patient search. These activities were held to introduce students to the course and what they can expect from the course going forward. The activities conducted were physically and mentally challenging for the students and gave them the opportunity to work together as a team.

The EMC HOD, Naguran applauded the students for completing the activities and for working together as a team. He went on to urge them to be physically fit as there are more activities that will demand their physicality and for them to be fast as every second counts when dealing with patients’ lives.

The general consensus from students who formed part of the two-day orientation was that it was an intense experience for them as it required them to show their physical abilities and be able to put their trust onto one  another.
