The Durban University of Technology (DUT) approved the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework. The five values are identified as transparency, honesty, integrity, respect, and accountability. The principles espoused are fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion, and excellence. DUT’s Communications team, Patience Makhaye, spoke to Mncedisi Jupith Ndlovu, a media and marketing officer based at the Sport Administration Unit.
Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?
A: “I am a media and marketing officer for the Sport Administration Unit, I am responsible for showcasing the passion, grit, and undeniable talent within DUT’s sport arena, both in real-time and across the digital landscape. I am responsible for capturing the sporting events by means of still and motion pictures, managing the social media platforms for the unit.”
Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?
A: “My connection to DUT runs deep, stretching five years back: three years spent honing my skills as a student, and two more as the proud media and marketing officer for DUT Sport Administration Unit.”
Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?
A: “While each of the ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles resonates with me in different ways, creativity sets my soul alight. As a media and marketing officer, my very role hinges on the ability to think outside the box. It’s about conjuring compelling visuals, and finding fresh ways to engage a dynamic, digital-first generation. In this fast-paced world, staying ahead of the curve demands constant innovation. Every campaign, every post, is a mini canvas for me to express my creative spirit while remaining true to the core values of ENVISION2030.”
Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative. Distinctive. Impactful?
A: “The tagline Creative. Distinctive. Impactful. is more than just words; it’s a call to action. It’s a reminder of what makes DUT special, and it’s a promise to continue pushing boundaries and making a positive impact on the world. It inspires us to embrace our creativity, celebrate our individuality, and strive to make a meaningful impact. As a member of the DUT family, I feel empowered by this message and driven to contribute to the university’s vision and mission.”
Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?
A: “I plan on keeping abreast with ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework by actively engaging with the framework through formal channels being workshops and training sessions that will increase my knowledge on the latest applications and best practices in my field as well as engaging with the online resources provided by DUT so I can stay informed about the implementation process and merge ideas. I also plan on going through the informal channels, being engaging in conversations with colleagues from different facilities and seeking opportunities to apply the living values and more. The main aim is to remain updated, apply its principles in my work, and contribute to a positive and impactful DUT community. Remember, staying abreast is not just about acquiring information; it’s about integrating the Living Values into the fabric of our daily lives.”
Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?
A: “I have traded bustling film sets for capturing life’s most intimate moments. Yes, I used to work behind the scenes for shows on Netflix and Mzansi Wethu, and now I run a media company that immortalises weddings, milestone parties., and every kind of special occasion.”
Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?
A: “In my opinion, the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework can offer DUT a multitude of benefits, touching every aspect of the university community. It’s the spark that ignites the passion within each member of the DUT community, empowering us to rewrite the narrative of our university. It’s about building a legacy not just of academic achievements, but of impact, innovation, and a deep sense of shared purpose.”
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: “When I’m not knee-deep in the world of DUT sport, you will probably find me somewhere getting my adrenaline pumping! Being sporty is my fuel, and I have a real trinity of favourites: rugby, basketball, and swimming. Each one scratches a different itch in my adventurous soul.”
Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?
A: “Ultimately, my goal is to ensure that DUT sport isn’t just about winning games, but about building a supportive community, promoting positive values, and inspiring everyone to reach their full potential. Sport is a tool for engagement, inclusivity, and positive social change. I believe that by sharing inspiring stories, creating opportunities, and building bridges with well-known teams that are not only local but national and provincial I can contribute to a more vibrant and impactful DUT community; as well as creating high performance centre it will encourage sponsors and partners with well-known brands as well as attract upcoming athletes.”
Q: What is your daily motivation?
A: “My family is the compass that guides my every step. Seeing the sparkle in my son’s eyes and the gentle pride in my grandmother’s smile motivates me to push boundaries and reach for my goals. They remind me that success is measured not just in achievements, but in the joy we bring to each other.”
Q: What are your future goals at DUT?
A: “My greatest vision for the future of DUT sport is to witness its transformation into a high-performance centre, a buzzing hub where athletes from all disciplines reach their full potential and conquer new heights. It’s a vision that paints a picture of DUT sport not just competing but dominating on the regional and national stage.”
Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
A: “To get a 1000 wishes.”
