DUT LIBRARY HOST ITS SECOND RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM TO PROMOTE THE CULTURE OF RESEARCH

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Library hosted its second Research Colloquium on Friday 3 November 2023 at the BM Patel Library. This exciting event was a hybrid event, as participants attended physically and virtually via MS Teams.

This programme was initiated to encourage library staff to increase participation in the production of scientific knowledge for conferences, colloquiums, and publishing in scientific publications. Moreover, this event serves as a platform for library staff to share ideas, research papers, and proposals. It also facilitates discussions and feedback among library staff, promoting the growth and refinement of innovative concepts both before and after their presentations beyond DUT. During his delivery of the welcome and opening remarks, Mr. David Thomas, Manager of Academic Services, underscored the significance and far-reaching influence of the colloquium, extending its impact beyond the boundaries of DUT. He also conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to all the presenters and mentors who exhibited unwavering dedication to this initiative.

Presentations were classified into two distinct categories: “Lightning Talks” and “Conference Stream.” The Lightning Talks encompassed four distinct segments, each focusing on “Space and Capacity Development,” “Instructional Programmes,” “Library Resources” and “Information Technology.” The Lightning Talk segment featured a total of 11 presentations, and the Conference Stream consisted of 5 paper presentations.

The Library Director, Dr Malefetjane Phaladi further provided positive feedback and suggestions to all presenters as part of encouraging more staff members to participate in the programme.

“By hosting this colloquium, we demonstrate our commitment as leaders to align the minds and hearts of smart library professionals with some ENVISION2030 strategic objectives. The initiative is beginning to bear fruit. During this year alone, four of our staff members presented papers at international conferences (ECIL2023, ECKM2023 & IATUL2023), and two at the recent LIASA Conference in the Western Cape. Ten papers have been accepted for publication in internationally reputable journals and books. That is transformational, visionary, smart, and knowledge-based leadership in action,” Dr Phaladi stated.

In his Vote of Thanks, Mr Ayanda Twala, a member of the Staff Training and Development Working Group, acknowledged the contributions of all participants, presenters, mentors, and organizers.
