ZUNGU WANTS TO BECOME THE VOICE OF THE VOICELESS STUDENTS

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Student Representative Council (SRC) Sports and Recreation Officer in Pietermaritzburg, Mr Sabatha Zungu (21) is committed to assisting students from the disadvantaged backgrounds.

Zungu is currently completing his third-year in Public Relations and Communications Management. He was born in Hluhluwe, North of KwaZulu-Natal and he grew up in Hammarsdale.

According to Zungu, transitioning from being a normal student to an SRC member has its challenges. He has to sacrifice most of his personal time in order to attend to student queries and come up with ways to assist them.

He stressed that he is passionate about helping students because he believes that some students find it hard to disclose their issues and they do not know who to contact in order to get help.

“I believe we need to restore our dignity as the Students Representative Council and gain the trust of the students especially with the dwindling voter results of the last SRC elections,” said Zungu.

He commended the SRC for ensuring that the 2023 registration were smooth when compared to the previous years but he pointed out that there are a few challenges that they faced.

“As the SRC along with the University we are working tirelessly to resolve student issues, because our goal is to ensure that all students receive satisfactory assistants since they are the ones who voted us into these roles,” reiterated Zungu.

Zungu plans to become the first person to obtain his Master’s Degree in his family.

“ My childhood dream was to study at DUT and now that I am at DUT, I want to leave my mark during my tenure as an SRC member as well as in the institution at large,” he added.

He wants to work hand in hand with the Sports Administration Unit at DUT to ensure that students have access to all sports codes available at the university. He also wants students living with disabilities to get access and engage on the various sports codes offered at DUT.
