The Twelves Apostles Church in Christ Organisation (TACCSO) members are helping first-year students with issues pertaining to their registration processes. The TACCSO members can be found outside Ritson campus, across Steve Biko road since the beginning of the 23 January 2023 until 20 February 2023.
TACCSO is a huge church organisation that was first established at the Mangosuthu of Technology (MUT) in 2009, and was then launched at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), the same year in 2009.
TACCSO was established to help students to balance their academics, social well-being and their spiritual beings.
Mluleki Mhlongo, a third-year Somatology student at DUT, and a member of TACCSO, explained the role of TACCSO.
“The reason behind TACCSO is to create a home away from home for students, the organisation understands the temptations that students face when they come to university where there are no parents around so the organisation aims to help restore humanity and preach the word of God to students. The organisation also encourages students to continue going to church even when they are in universities. The organisation also promotes respect, humanity, peace, showing love to one another and fearing God,” he said.
He further added that as an organisation they had decided to help students with their registration journeys because they understood that they are not familiar with the university system and need guidance.
“We decided to help the students with accepting offers, showing them the registration venues and helping them with any other inquiries that they might have. We also help students with university applications, career exposure, National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), bursary applications and returning students to apply for residents or accommodations,” he said.
Furthermore, TACCSO also help students who are facing difficulties and recommend them to the organisations that will help if the problem is beyond their control.
“The organisation does not have enough funding but there are organisations that we work hand in hand with namely, SETA, student counselling, student admissions and many more. The organisation also help with food security for those students who do not have food due to not having funding or financial backup. The organisation also have programmes that enhance the academic performance, ways of socialising where they organise get-togethers which aims to build and maintain good relationships within the organisation. DUT TACCSO hosts church services from Monday to Sunday for an hour, using one of the classes at the Steve Biko campus as their church venue,” said Mhlongo.
“TACCSO members really helped me, I was struggling to register and accept my offer but they helped me do the necessary steps in accepting the offer. I am truly grateful to them and I am on my way to register at Ritson Campus now,” said Samkelo Mkhize, a jubilant first-year student at DUT.
