12TH ANNUAL MAHATMA GANDHI MEDIA LECTURE

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Journalism Department in partnership with the Gandhi Development Trust, Phoenix Settlement Trust and the Aggrey Klaaste Trust will be hosting the 12th Annual Mahatma Gandhi Media Lecture (MGML) themed: The Need for Responsible Journalism in Nation-Building. This prestigious event will be virtual, via Microsoft Teams on Friday morning, 06 August 2021 from 10h00 to 11h30.

The 2021 event will feature Mr Jerome Klaaste, a public speaker, community builder, the Founder and Executive Director of the Aggrey Klaaste Trust (AKT), which was established in 2017. The AKT is named after Aggrey Klaaste, the late former editor of Sowetan newspaper and community activist, who famously championed a philosophy of nation building to rebuild South African communities that had witnessed horrific violence and state repression.

Klaaste is very proud of the late Aggrey whom he believes used his pen and boundless energy to call for stronger and self-reliant communities so that South Africa’s political freedom could have a deeper meaning. He said the AKT seeks to preserve the legacy of nation building through the creation of community-based projects that help to rid communities of many social ills that they face and foster self-pride.

Advocate Robin Sewlal, Associate Director: Journalism at DUT, will direct the proceedings of the event which will also include opening remarks by Professor Sibusiso Moyo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement at DUT.

The Mahatma Gandhi Media Lecture was launched by the former Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Broadcasting, Mr Jay Naidoo.

Speakers over the years included Delhi-based author, Advocate Anil Nauriya, Africa Program Co-ordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Angela Quintal, Mondli Makhanya, Editor-in-Chief at City Press, and Sello Hatang, Chief Executive Officer at the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
